PUBLIC SCULPTURE or MEMORIAL PROJECT

1. Read about MAYA LIN's Memorial Projects:
(Then answer the questions in your packet!)

http://googolplex.cuna.org/18592/ajsmall/article.php?doc_id=1467

2. Decide on a TOPIC or meaning for your public sculpture:
  • Name 3 issues that are important to you. (for example: peace, education, civil rights, poverty etc.)
  • Choose ONE topic.
  • NOW USE THE INTERNET TO RESEARCH YOUR TOPIC! (WHAT IS IMPORTANT OR INTERESTING ABOUT IT? WHAT DO YOU WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT IT?)
3. Now research the SITE for your your sculpture:
Write these answers in your packet!
Search the internet for the answers if you need to!
  • Where is the site (place you want to put your sculpture) ?
  • Who will see your artwork?
  • Why are these people at the site?
  • Why will they be interested in your sculpture?
  • What else is going on at this place?
  • What do people do at this site?
  • What time of day are most people there?
  • What is important information about your site?

4. Next, write your PROPOSAL:

HELPFUL HINTS:

  • You are writing this proposal to get a "job".
  • A proposal is basically a PERSUASIVE ESSAY.
  • First, you should tell the person reading about your TOPIC. give interesting facts and reasons why it is a topic that is special to YOU.
  • Next, you should discuss why the SITE you chose is important and a good place to have your artwork. Discuss the facts about your site that make it an interesting and important place to display your sculpture.
  • Then, discuss your sculpture in DETAIL. What does it look like? (Describe the colors, forms, details) How big is it? What material is it made out of? How do you want people to feel when looking at it or walking around it? Are there words that will go with it? What are you trying to do by exposing people to your sculpture and its meaning?

SOFT SCULPTURES -make something NORMAL into something STRANGE!!

This sculpture of CAKE (it is taller than me!) was created by a famous artist named Claes Oldenburg read this short bit about his work then answer the questions in the packet!
Claes Oldenburg creates metamorphoses in everyday life:
When a match or a lipstick grows into a monumental size, much bigger than the the size of the viewer, or when a hard and heavy tool becomes soft and squishy, the impression is inevitably comic. A sense of humour is one of the central elements of Claes Oldenburg’s art. But it is not only about making a visual joke. Surprising shifts in scale (size) and materials change and refresh the concept of art and public art in particular. For Oldenburg, any everyday object can serve as a beginning for his artwork: a machine, a used match, a baseball bat, a spoon, food- anything. He changes the shape of the original object into another material and scale (size), the result opens the viewer’s eyes to a new way of looking at both everyday objects and public sculptures.

  • Follow the directions in the packet.
  • Record all of your ideas, drawings and glue in any images you print out into your packet.
  • Remember this sculpture will be donated to the Reading Room @ the Youth Center!

Autobiographical Poem:Phenomenal Woman - Maya Angelou

Phenomenal Woman By Maya Angelou
Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's sizeBut when I start to tell them,They think I'm telling lies.I say,It's in the reach of my armsThe span of my hips,The stride of my step,The curl of my lips.I'm a womanPhenomenally.Phenomenal woman,That's me.I walk into a roomJust as cool as you please,And to a man,The fellows stand orFall down on their knees. Then they swarm around me,A hive of honey bees.I say,It's the fire in my eyes,And the flash of my teeth,The swing in my waist,And the joy in my feet.I'm a womanPhenomenally.Phenomenal woman,That's me.

•Men themselves have wonderedWhat they see in me.They try so muchBut they can't touchMy inner mystery. When I try to show themThey say they still can't see.I say,It's in the arch of my back,The sun of my smile,The ride of my breasts,The grace of my style.I'm a womanPhenomenally.Phenomenal woman,That's me.Now you understandJust why my head's not bowed.I don't shout or jump aboutOr have to talk real loud. When you see me passingIt ought to make you proud.I say,It's in the click of my heels,The bend of my hair, the palm of my hand,The need of my care,'Cause I'm a womanPhenomenally.Phenomenal woman,That's me.

Hi Sculpture students!

For this project you will creating a MOBILE sculpture. Your materials will be wire, yarn, fishing line and fabric- and any others you want.

Today you should: (RECORD ALL IDEAS IN YOUR SKETCHBOOK!)
1. Choose your "spirit animal" (An animal helper that has special meaning to you.)
By going the links to the Native American websites below.
2. Find and print images to include in your mobile.
(These should be images of things or situations in your life that you want
to have strength or power for...
or symbols of things that you want to keep safe.)
For example this is the list I began for myself:
  • Protect my family (I want to represent my family with the symbol I use for home- the igloo).
  • Help my creativity stay strong (I would find images of paint cans).
  • Encourage me to exercise more (maybe an image of a tree for the "tree pose" in yoga).
  • And others (that are more personal- I will create symbols for them so that only I will know what they are about. ;)
3. Work on drawings of some of your ideas.
