1. Read about MAYA LIN's Memorial Projects:
(Then answer the questions in your packet!)

http://googolplex.cuna.org/18592/ajsmall/article.php?doc_id=1467

2. Decide on a TOPIC or meaning for your public sculpture:
  • Name 3 issues that are important to you. (for example: peace, education, civil rights, poverty etc.)
  • Choose ONE topic.
  • NOW USE THE INTERNET TO RESEARCH YOUR TOPIC! (WHAT IS IMPORTANT OR INTERESTING ABOUT IT? WHAT DO YOU WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT IT?)
3. Now research the SITE for your your sculpture:
Write these answers in your packet!
Search the internet for the answers if you need to!
  • Where is the site (place you want to put your sculpture) ?
  • Who will see your artwork?
  • Why are these people at the site?
  • Why will they be interested in your sculpture?
  • What else is going on at this place?
  • What do people do at this site?
  • What time of day are most people there?
  • What is important information about your site?

4. Next, write your PROPOSAL:

HELPFUL HINTS:

  • You are writing this proposal to get a "job".
  • A proposal is basically a PERSUASIVE ESSAY.
  • First, you should tell the person reading about your TOPIC. give interesting facts and reasons why it is a topic that is special to YOU.
  • Next, you should discuss why the SITE you chose is important and a good place to have your artwork. Discuss the facts about your site that make it an interesting and important place to display your sculpture.
  • Then, discuss your sculpture in DETAIL. What does it look like? (Describe the colors, forms, details) How big is it? What material is it made out of? How do you want people to feel when looking at it or walking around it? Are there words that will go with it? What are you trying to do by exposing people to your sculpture and its meaning?

SOFT SCULPTURES -make something NORMAL into something STRANGE!!

This sculpture of CAKE (it is taller than me!) was created by a famous artist named Claes Oldenburg read this short bit about his work then answer the questions in the packet!
Claes Oldenburg creates metamorphoses in everyday life:
When a match or a lipstick grows into a monumental size, much bigger than the the size of the viewer, or when a hard and heavy tool becomes soft and squishy, the impression is inevitably comic. A sense of humour is one of the central elements of Claes Oldenburg’s art. But it is not only about making a visual joke. Surprising shifts in scale (size) and materials change and refresh the concept of art and public art in particular. For Oldenburg, any everyday object can serve as a beginning for his artwork: a machine, a used match, a baseball bat, a spoon, food- anything. He changes the shape of the original object into another material and scale (size), the result opens the viewer’s eyes to a new way of looking at both everyday objects and public sculptures.

  • Follow the directions in the packet.
  • Record all of your ideas, drawings and glue in any images you print out into your packet.
  • Remember this sculpture will be donated to the Reading Room @ the Youth Center!
